Out to wrap up Victoria Cup

AIKEN WOULD TAKE GREAT DELIGHT IF HE CAN BE THE BOSS AT FINISH OF FEATURE EVENT AT MELTON

Old boys club: Veterans Brian King and Kains Boy combined for yet another win last week at Echuca.

Fresh from producing the winner Wrappers Delight in the $50 000 Smoken Up Free For All last Saturday, Aiken has that pacer and also Im The Boss tackling tomorrow night’s Group One $200 000 Victoria Cup at headquarters.

Im The Boss, a rank outsider has come up with barrier four and Wrappers Delight who is an 18/1 shot has drawn barrier seven, the extreme outside of the front row, in the event in which Western Australian pocket rocket Chicago Bull looks the testing material after drawing barrier three.

Swedish reinswoman Kima Frenning, who has partnered Wrappers Delight and Im The Boss to major race wins in recent times, has given punters a pointer by electing to drive Wrappers Delight in the 2240 m feature despite a less favourable draw than his stablemate. Greg Sugars will partner Im The Boss.

Aiken will also line-up the in-form Makes Every Scents, a winner again at Melton last Saturday night and Audi Hare in a Free For All which will also be contested by Kyabramtrained Brallos Pass.

Audi Hare was massive in finishing fourth to Wrappers Delight in the Smoken Up Sprint, beaten less than 4 m, but has a second row to overcome.

Former Kyabram Football Club premiership coach Peter Lyon and his son Garry also have a special interest in the race, joining a syndicate which has bought a share of Shadow Sax who is third favourite in the race.

Northern Victorian trainers are well represented at at Melton.

In the Group Three $30 000 Empire Stallions Platinum Pace district-trained pacers Four Shotzzz, Herehecomes and Sofala all face tricky barrier draws.

An oldie but a goodie

The veterans combined for the longest priced winner on last week’s Echuca program.

Violet Town septuagenarian, trainer Brian King, and his 10-yearold gelding Kains Boy combined to stun punters by claiming the honours in a T0 or better class trot.

Kains Boy has always had his share of ability, but his impeccable manners have also been a major key to his 13 wins. And that was again the case in his latest triumph when he finished over his rivals with Ellen Tormey in the sulky.

Off the back mark of 20 m Kains Boy was sitting on the back of the pacemaker Soh Twisted before the field had settled and from then on enjoyed the run of the race.

Tormey had to extricate the son of Zooma on the home turn to make his run at the leaders wide out, but he finished strongly to prevail by a head from Tella Tall Tale with Right Side up filling the minor placing.

Kains Boy had not won for 12 starts since December — and that was the reason plus his backmark handicap that he was a 30/1 shot on the tote.

But the lesson learnt was don’t underestimate the veterans who have not only combined for 13 wins, but also have 44 placings and more than $85 000 in prizemoney under their belts.

Tennaya now a teen

While mentioning veterans, nineyear-old mare Tennaya showed she still has plenty of zip in her ageing legs to account for a C1 Only class field at Echuca.

The Donna Castles-trained and driven daughter of Lombo Mandingo bounced back after three unplaced runs to notch her 13th win.

Castles reined Tennaya up at the start in the 1755 m dash to hold the lead from barrier two and was never in danger of defeat after that, accounting for the runner-up, the Dave Farrar-trained, Hayjoshandco and Nelbell.

Tennaya is a veteran of 125 starts which apart from the 13 wins have produced 37 placings and more than $73 000 in prizemoney.

Keeps Beltane them

Four-year-old Bettors Delight gelding Beltane completed a hattrick of wins with a narrow success at Echuca.

In a crowded finish the Patrick Ryan-trained Beltane accounted for the Dean Chandler-trained Mister Lombo by a half neck with Fowsands and Rockon Angel close-up in a four-way battle to the finishing post in a the C2 Only class race over the 1755 m trip.

Beltane had won at Echuca and Shepparton at his previous two starts and has now won four of his past five outings and has never finished further back than fourth in eight starts for Ryan. He has now won seven of his 27 starts.

Double up in style

Congupna horseman Scott Stewart is a bit like the spring sun — he’s warming up. In fact running hot. At Echuca he produced a training and driving double in successive races with Alpe De Huez and Travlininstyle.

Both produced front running wins and for Travlininstyle, who took the honours in a C1 only class race, it was her fourth win in her past five starts.

The four-year-old Village Jolt mare didn’t salute in her first 10 starts, but has more than made up for the inconspicuous start to her racing career.

Alpe De Huez proved a class above his rivals in a C3-C5 class race over the 2160 m trip.

He zoomed straight to the front from barrier four and drew clear of his rivals in the home straight to beat the runner-up Master Mach Manus by nearly 12 m with the Jeff Gledhilltrained and Ben Gledhill-driven roughie Zozo Ma Gogo battling on well for third.

The Changeover six-year-old, who tackles a M0 class race from a favourable draw at Melton tomorrow night, has now won eight races and been placed 16 times for Stewart and is closing in on the $50 000 prizemoney earnings milestone.

Abbey’s choice Spunk

Tatura reinswoman Abbey Turnbull followed up her recent Maryborough win with another winner at Echuca.

Turnbull partnered another of her father Craig’s team, Spunkyola, to a comfortable win in a C1 Only class race over the 1755 m.

Turnbull was able to take full advantage of the Bettors Delight gelding’s poleline barrier draw and dictated terms from the front to account for the Rochester-trained outsider Kiama Sutra and Classic Maker.

Spunkyola was returning from a freshen-up and has provided Turnbull with two her now seven winners in the sulky.

Spunkyola has now chalked up eight wins with 16 placings from 88 starts for more than $41 000 in prizemoney.

Rockin’ Dunrobbin

Rochester-trained Dunrobbin completed successive wins when he saluted at the Echuca last week.

An impressive winner at Shepparton at his previous start on September 28 when resuming, and only in his fourth start, the Mark Thompson-trained Dunrobbin was too good for a C0 Only class field.

With a slick 27.1 final split Dunrobbin, driven by Todd Matthews, accounted for Father Judge and the Gary Payne-trained roughie Artizz.

Dunrobbin peeled off some really quick sectionals in his previous win and punters supported him into a $1.80 favouritism for the Echuca win.

The Thompson-Matthews team went within 1.4 m of a double with another of the Thompson runners, Kiama Sutra, finishing second to Spunkyola in his fifth start for the stable since coming south from NSW.

Fast is better

Merrigum trainer Brett Bunfield completed a good night for district trainers at Echuca when he produced Fast And Bettor in a C0 Only class race.

The win also completed a driving double for reinswoman Ellen Tormey who partnered Fast And Bettor and also won on the trotter Kains Boy.

It was the Bettors Delight fouryear-old’s first win at start 12 and he won comfortably from the Kyabramtrained Dont Tell Alice and Fantasy Beach in a district trifecta.

Bunfield has had Fast And Bettor for eight starts and he had had three minor placings in that period leading up to the Echuca win.

Creating a Legacy

Talented Tongala-trained trotter Dynamic Legacy put in arguably a career best run last Friday night at Ballarat to notch his fourth win.

Trained by Michael Watt, the seven-year-old was given the run of the race on the back of the pacemaker, Pretty Little Lucy, and when reinsman Michael Bellman extricated him into clear running in the home straight he left his rivals, including the odds-on favourite, Rosehill Magic, standing.

He cruised to the line nearly 12 m clear of Rosehill Magic with roughie Celtic Rose filling the minor placing.

Dynamic Legacy’s mile rate of 2:01.8 for the 2200 m trip, which included a 59.3 last half, was a PB.

Dynamic Legacy is by Girgarre’s Niota stud stallion Great Success out of the unraced Safely Kept mare Dynamic Sensation and his grand dam is the Romeo Hanover mare Aerodynamic, a winner of five of 19 starts.

Dynamic Legacy, who tackles a $10 000 T1-T2 class trot tomorrow night at Melton has now had four wins and eight placings from the 28 starts with possibly better things to come.

Lining up Shotzzz

Merrigum-trained pacer Four Shotzzz made it five successive wins within a month when he saluted last Friday at Wagga.

The last four of these wins have been on the Wagga track with the winning spree kicking off at Leeton on September 8.

Trained by Brad Aylett, Four Shotzzz was driven to his latest win again by top Riverina reinsman Blake Jones who has partnered the fiveyear-old Four Starzzz Shark gelding to three of his past four wins.

Aylett also trained Four Shotzzz’s dam Elixir to 14 wins, which included the Australian Oaks.

Four Shotzzz who has now $66 000 in prizemoney will remain in Victoria for his next start, lining up from a wide front row draw in the Group Three $30 000 Platinum Pace tomorrow night at Melton.

Duo shows some Sass

Kialla horseman Clive Dalton and Echuca hobby trainer Geoff Allen were left to fly the flag for northern Victorian trainers on Wednesday night at Shepparton.

Dalton produced Allmightyjoelouis for a dashing win in a C1 Only class race, while Allen puts the polish on Sassyfeet who broke though for her first win at her 31st start.

A five-year-old by Roll With Joe, Allmightyjoelouis continued his fine Victorian record under Dalton’s guidance with his win.

In five starts here for Dalton the former Western Australian pacer has now chalked up two wins, two seconds and a third.

He was driven to victory in his latest win by Greg Sugars and vindicated the solid support from punters who sent him out a $2.20 favourite.

Despite never having saluted in 30 tries Sassyfeet was also well supported and a typical aggressive Chris Alford drive resulted in the Julius Caeser five-year-old mare running her rivals ragged with a dashing front-running display.

The other only district win on the night was savoured by Euroa horseman Cameron Maggs who piloted Imapest to win at nice odds in a C0 Only class race for Chiltern horseman Peter Romero.
