There is another A. Turnbull steadily making a name for herself in the Victorian harness racing driving ranks.
It was star reinswoman Amanda Turnbull’s first cousin Abbey who was turning heads last weekend.
The Tatura driver, daughter of prominent trainer Craig Turnbull, landed her second career double at Mildura last Friday and finished the weekend with a treble after a win at Shepparton last Sunday.
Abbey said this week her first driving double was achieved at Shepparton in early May when she piloted Kissing Game and Lights And Music to victories.
At Mildura last Friday her winners were the Scott Garrawaytrained Dontch See It and the Glenn Douglas-prepared Jayedgar, making the long trip to the farf lung Sunraysia city well worthwhile.
At Shepparton Turnbull was successful on Spunkyola, who is trained by her dad.
Turnbull is just completing her second year in the sulky and has now driven 22 winners.
There are lot of good judges who are confidently predicting she will build substantially on that tally in the years to come.
Majestic resurrection
Bunbartha trainer John Newberry has persuaded another of his veteran trotters to break a long sequence of outs.
Newberry recently produced trotter Call Me Earl for a win after a run of 32 outs and last Sunday another of his veterans, The Majestic, returned to the winners’ list for the first time since October 2017. That’s 35 starts ago.
The Majestic had been knocking on the door for a return to the winners’ list with top four finishes at his previous two starts at Shepparton.
And despite his run of outs from the winner’s circle punters hadn’t discarded his chances and he was a 5/1 shot on the tote.
Coming off a 30 m handicap and driven by his trainer, the nine-yearold trotting son of Monarchy was able to beat the Mick Watt-trained roughie Hettivale with the Brian Bourke-trained Starlight Storm filling the minor placing in gallant style off a 70 m handicap.
The Majestic has now won 12 races with 35 placings and stakemoney earnings of more than $94 000.
A Gaye old time
Tongala pacer Roslyn Gaye’s love of the Shepparton track was again evident last Sunday night.
After winning at the previous meeting when breaking a run of 18 outs, the Gary Merkel-trained fouryear-old daughter of Artistic Fella repeated the dose last Sunday when driven to victory by Chris Svanosio.
That victory meant all of Roslyn Gaye’s four wins have been at Shepparton.
And Roslyn Gaye performed her latest win in style, rating a 1:57.7 PB mile rate for the 1690 m trip.
Marto has a Hanover
Shepparton trainer Geoff Martin and reinswoman Bec Bartley combined for a maiden win with Allvictory Hanover last Sunday at Shepparton.
The three-year-old son of All Speed Hanover was having only his sixth trip to the races and hadn’t been placed in five previous runs, but he was well found by punters who supported him into a $2.30 favourite.
The finish of the 1690 m race turned into a local affair with Allvictory Hanover accounting for the Dave Farrar-trained National Draft and the Danny Thackeray-prepared Arden Up.
Allvictory Hanover posted a creditable rate of 1:58.9 for the 1690 m trip.
Kings of Kyabram
Kyabram trainers were well to the fore at Shepparton last Sunday.
Talented pacing mare Flojos Gold was back in the winner’s circle along with Artizz.
Trained by Mark Watson Flojos Gold, a six-year-old daughter of Mach Three driven by Ellen Torney, produced a 56.8 last half and a 1:56.9 mile rate which put paid to her rivals.
Flojos Gold has been a great moneyspinner for connections with 25 wins from 61 starts with her latest win taking her prizemoney earnings to more than $200 000.
In contrast the Gary Paynetrained and driven Artizz chalked up only his second win with 25 placings from 86 tries.
Crown thrones await
It’s Breeders Crown finals time tonight and tomorrow night at Melton and Avenel trainer David Aiken and Shepparton mentor Russell Jack are well represented.
Aiken lines up Audi Hare and Wrappers Delight in the $60 000 Graduate Pacers Free-For-All tonight.
Kima Frenning has Buster Brady in the same race, while Aiken will also have Big Jack Hammer contesting the $35 000 Trotters Free-For-All tonight.
Aiken will be busy again tomorrow night with Max Delight and Malcolms Rhythm chasing the $200 000 carrot in three-year-old colts and geldings final.
Max Delight has drawn to run a big race in barrier two, while Malcolms Rhythm has to contend with barrier seven.
Shepparton-trained Lochinvar Art, who chased home Malcolms Rhythm in their semi-final, will come from barrier 11 in the same race for trainer Laura Crossland and reinsman David Moran.
Jack is chasing the big money tomorrow night with Santa Casa Beach in the $300 000 two-year-old colts and geldings final, Three Summas in the $50 000 four-year-old entires and geldings pacers final and Jaxnme in the $100 000 two-year-old fillies trotters final.
In the two-year-old trotters final Cameron Maggs and Patrick Ryan will be represented by Venkman and Dizzysjet respectively.
The Steve O’Donoghue-trained Wayonbye is also contesting the fouryear-old entires and geldings final along with the Aiken-trained Higher than an eagle.
The Ryan-trained Starsbythebeach is drawn to run a cheeky race from barrier two in the $300 000 twoyear-old fillies pacers final.
The Aiken-prepared Hate it when your rite is also contesting the $80 000 three-year-old colts and geldings trotters final tomorrow night.
